UK Monkeypox Cases Show Different Symptoms From Previous Outbreaks, Study Finds
Patients with Monkeypox in England have symptoms that feel different from those who have monkeypox in endemic countries, according to researchers in London.Globally, the burden of the Monkeypox case has passed 5,000 out of more than 50 countries, with one death reported from Nigeria. Monkeypox, which is traditionally endemic for the parts of West and Middle Africa, has seen a large surge in cases in 2022, in people who do not have a history of travel to endemic countries.
While monkeypox patients usually report fever, fatigue, and rashes and skin lesions on the face and other body parts, researchers say that cases in the UK have reported more skin lesions in the genital and anal regions. This study includes a sample size of 54 people from a clinic in England. Who had said previously that a number of large cases of Monkeypox were detected, detected in men who had sex with men.
This study, published in The Lancet infectious Diseases Journal, detailed the symptoms as follows:This study concluded that the monkeypox variant that spreads in the UK presents unusual symptoms, and must be carefully studied. It also added that it is important to monitor cases carefully, because Monkeypox can be confused for STD like herpes or syphilis.
The Monkeypox case began to spread in non -endemic countries, in April 2022.While WHO has stated that Monkeypox is not a state of public health emergency (PHEIC), they have suggested increased monitoring and inoculation of vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, people who are immunocompromy, and children.
