College Seniors Show Interest in Using ChatGPT for Resume Writing, but HR Professionals Express Caution

As the class of 2023 prepares to enter the job market, college seniors are showing an increasing interest in utilizing ChatGPT, an AI language model, to write their resumes. However, some HR professionals are expressing wariness and may reject candidates who rely on AI-generated resumes.
In its recently released 8th annual “Class of” report, talent cloud company iCIMS gathered information from college students and recent graduates to help human resource departments better understand and engage with this demographic. The report highlights that the class of 2023 is grappling with economic anxiety and shifting aspirations due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Alongside these concerns, new graduates are also embracing generative AI technology, particularly since the debut of ChatGPT in December. The report reveals that 47 percent of college seniors express interest in using ChatGPT or similar AI bots to assist in crafting their resumes or cover letters. Additionally, 25 percent of Generation Z job seekers have already utilized AI bots for this purpose.
Commenting on the potential of generative AI bots like ChatGPT, iCIMS Chief Technology Officer Al Smith stated, “Generative AI bots have the potential to help both candidates and employers be more productive and communicate better. From resumes and job descriptions to offer letters and onboarding material, the technology offers employers and recruiters a better starting point as they move through the hiring journey.”
However, job seekers who opt for AI-generated resumes should exercise caution, as 39 percent of HR professionals view the use of AI technology during the hiring process as a dealbreaker. While ChatGPT and similar AI tools can aid in productivity and communication, there are concerns about the reliability and authenticity of information generated by these bots, especially considering the potential involvement of unscrupulous developers.
Given these considerations, it may be advisable for college seniors to approach their resume and cover letter writing in a more traditional manner, relying on their own skills and expertise. While ChatGPT can assist in generating ideas, candidates should ensure that the final content accurately represents their qualifications and experiences, taking care to avoid any embellishments or misleading information.
As the job market evolves and AI technology continues to advance, the delicate balance between leveraging AI tools and demonstrating personal effort in the application process remains a subject of ongoing discussion. College seniors and new graduates must navigate this landscape carefully, considering the preferences and concerns of HR professionals while ensuring their resumes effectively showcase their unique capabilities and potential.
